Busy kitchens and canteen areas use a host of hazardous equipment that could become dangerous if they were left unattended. Think of deep fat fryers and traditional chip pans and you`ll have some idea of the types of cooking equipment that could catch fire if the cook in charge of them isn`t paying attention. I`ve actually witnessed a chip pan fire and it can be a scary incident to be involved in. At first you sort of freeze not knowing what to do but then common-sense kicks in and you react to the situation. When my chip fan caught fire I used a Fire Blanket to cover the flames. Left in position the blanket worked fine but my heart was thudding for a long time afterwards. Since that incident I now take more care when I`m cooking but I still have a Fire Blanket in my kitchen that can be used if my pans catch on fire again. The blanket works by smothering the flames of the fire and starving it of the oxygen that it needs to keep on burning. Most industrial kitchens will have a Fire Blanket in place as well as a host of other fire safety equipment. It pays to provide this type of fire safety gear as you just never know when a blaze might break out.
